Keeping Elderly People Safe and Healthy During the Monsoon Season

Why Monsoon Is a High-Risk Season for Elderly People

The monsoon brings welcome relief from summer heat — but it also brings distinct health risks for elderly people: respiratory infections, waterborne illness, joint pain flare-ups, falls on wet surfaces, and mosquito-borne disease. Anticipating these risks and taking simple preventive steps can make the monsoon season significantly safer.

Respiratory Health During Monsoon

The monsoon creates ideal conditions for viral and bacterial respiratory infections. For elderly people, a respiratory infection that a younger person shakes off in a week can become pneumonia requiring hospitalisation.

•       Ensure pneumococcal and influenza vaccinations are up to date before the season

•       Keep the home ventilated without exposing the elder to direct draughts or cold air

•       Maintain strict hand hygiene — washing before meals, after using the bathroom

•       Avoid crowded public places during peak infection periods

Waterborne Disease and Gastrointestinal Health

•       Drink only boiled or filtered water — do not assume municipal supply is safe during monsoon

•       Eat freshly cooked, hot food — avoid raw salads, cut fruits from outside, and street food

•       At the first sign of diarrhoea, begin oral rehydration solution alongside medical review

In elderly people, even a short episode of diarrhoea can cause rapid and dangerous dehydration.

Joint Pain During Monsoon

Many elderly people with arthritis report significant worsening of joint pain during cold, damp weather.

•       Warm the affected joints — a warm compress or warm oil massage provides relief

•       Maintain indoor physical activity — do not stop movement entirely because outdoor walking is not possible

•       Dress the elder appropriately for cooler monsoon temperatures, particularly at night

Fall Prevention During Monsoon

•       Place non-slip mats at every entrance and in the bathroom

•       Ensure elderly people have non-slip footwear for both indoor and outdoor use

•       Clear moss or algae from outdoor paths and steps promptly

•       Ensure stairways are well lit — have backup lighting for power cuts

Mosquito-Borne Disease

•       Eliminate all standing water around the home — pots, tyres, drainage blockages

•       Use mosquito nets, repellents, and window screens

•       If fever develops, seek medical review promptly — do not wait
